About Daniel J. Mellin

Dan Mellin has concentrated in real estate and business law and probate in Anne Arundel County over the past 30 years, enjoying the respect of his fellow attorneys and clients, and receiving numerous referrals from other attorneys as well as his own clients. He has extensive experience and knowledge in real estate transactions and litigation, land use and zoning and development law, and administrative hearings, condominiums and home owner associations, liquor licenses, leases and real estate contracts, probate, and business transactions and litigation.

He believes that the best practice for lawyers is to always determine the client’s legal needs, realistically assess their likelihood for success and the most efficient and cost effective way to proceed to protect that client’s rights. Clients want to communicate their legal problems and concerns to their attorney and they want their attorney to communicate back how they can best be protected.

Dan was born, raised and educated in Washington D.C. His family has spent summers in Sherwood Forest on the Severn River since 1956 and moved here year round in 1975. He received his college degree at Georgetown University in 1974, and earned 60 graduate credit hours towards a Masters of Fine Arts in Drama at The George Washington University. He received his law degree in 1981 from the University of Maryland School of Law and joined the Annapolis law firm Hillman Brown & Darrow in 1982.

Mr. Mellin has served on many boards including:

  • Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission Inquiry Panels and Peer Review Panels
  • Severn River Association
  • The Anne Arundel County Food Bank
  • Saltaire Condominium Board of Directors
  • Sherwood Forest Club Board of Directors
  • The Charles Carroll House Board of Directors
  • Anne Arundel County Bar Association Board of Trustees

He is active at St Mary’s Parish, and was named an Honorary Alumnus in 2010. Dan’s wife, Nancy Mellin, retired as a special education teacher in Anne Arundel County Public Schools after 35 years. They have sponsored Midshipmen at the US Naval Academy for 20 years, and served as Commodore of the Navy Women’s Lacrosse Tailgate Division from 2010 to 2013. Their son Daniel Mellin Junior is a CPA originally with Pricewaterhouse Coopers and now at Challenger Cable Sales in Halethorpe. Their daughter Emily Mellin graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2013, served two deployments in the Persian Gulf, earned MIT Degrees in Mechanical and Naval Engineering, and is now stationed at the Washington Navy Yard.
